A vegan lifestyle is one of the most powerful things you can do for your health, the planet, and animal welfare. But let’s be honest—many people start with great intentions, only to feel tired, unwell, or overwhelmed… and end up going back to eating animal products.
The truth? It’s not because veganism doesn’t work. It’s because no one gave them the roadmap to succeed.
Here’s what I’ve seen in my years as a naturopath and plant-based nutritionist: the biggest struggles are rarely about protein or willpower. They’re about:
1. Gut Health:
A sudden fibre increase or unresolved imbalances like SIBO or Candida overgrowth can cause discomfort. A gradual approach and tailored support are essential.
2. Nutrient Deficiencies:
Omega-3s, B12, iron, iodine, zinc, and selenium are key. Many people simply aren’t aware of how to get enough—or how to make them bioavailable.
3. Lack of Social Support:
Being vegan in a non-vegan world can feel isolating. Without a community or understanding friends/family, many give up.
4. Undereating:
Plant foods are naturally lower in calories. If you’re not eating enough, fatigue and cravings are inevitable—and often wrongly blamed on the absence of animal foods.
5. Underlying Health Conditions:
Low mood, fatigue, or poor digestion are often symptoms of existing conditions, not caused by veganism. A full health picture and guidance from a plant-based healthcare practitioner is crucial.
6. Mindset (The Nocebo Effect):
Your beliefs shape your biology. Fear-based content, self-doubt, and misinformation can cause more harm than helpful changes ever could.
The takeaway?
Veganism is about more than what you cut out—it’s about what you nourish, and bring in. And with the right foundations, it’s not just possible to thrive—it’s deeply healing.
