I am undoubtedly a massive foodie- below are some of what I consider to be the best vegan restaurants in Sydney.
Shift Eatery- Surry Hills
Shift Eatery is my favourite destination when I find myself in Surry Hills. Shift’s premise is that it facilitates the shift from an omnivorous to a plant-based diet, providing a delicious range of both comfort food and healthy choices. If you’ve been craving sandwiches and toasties, this is certainly the place to come, though I usually find myself devouring their healthy bowl offerings.
My latest favourite has to be the Poke bowl; if you didn’t know better, you’d easily be forgiven for mistaking the beautifully marinated tomato for sushi. Their Mörk hot chocolate with macadamia milk is also out of this world, and the iced version is the best chocolate milk you’re ever going to taste!
Comeco Foods- Newtown
It’s been years since Sydney has boasted its own vegan sushi restaurant, until Comeco Foods came along to put us all out of our misery. Comeco Foods sushi is both vegan and gluten free, and (I hear) they offer some pretty outstanding sourdough doughnuts.
After I tried the sushi from Comeco, I was so impressed I ordered sushi platters for my birthday this year. The flavours are inventive, unusual and spectacularly tasty. I highly recommend.
VERD – Manly and Barangaroo
As far as healthy and delicious goes in Manly, it’s incredibly hard to move past VERD. Well-priced, delicious and thoroughly nutritionally balanced, I’ve never been disappointed with this place. It’s the kind of food you wish you had the patience to craft yourself at home.
Vegan Lebanese Bondi Beach – Bondi
I LOVE Lebanese food, and I believe it is one of those cuisines that lends itself so naturally to a vegan diet. When you think about it, so many of the staple favourites of Lebanese food are already usually vegan: hummus, baba ghanough, tahini, falafel, majadara, vine leaves, tabouli, fatoush. VLBB takes these foods and adds on offerings such as plant-based meats for dishes such as Kafta and Shawarma. Such a delicious menu if you find yourself down in Bondi! My favourite meal is the majadara with a side of fattoush; besides being delicious, it’s also perfectly nutritionally balanced with plenty of protein, iron, zinc and complex carbohydrates.
Nalini’s – Bronte, Bondi Beach and Bondi Junction
I’ve been going to Nalini’s for YEARS, and I’m impressed by how the menu has recently evolved. Their new night time menu is absolutely delicious, as are their probiotic-rich dosas and refined-sugar free ice cream. Whether you’re in the mood for curry, salad or lentil falafels, Nalini’s has you covered.
Khamsa Cafe- Newtown
As you may have guessed I love Middle Eastern food, and believe it lends itself perfectly to vegan eats. Khamsa offers some deliciously crafted meals, but when I go there I usually can’t decide, and just end up ordering all my favourite share plates at once: Baba ghanough, Fava beans and potatoes with a side of flat bread. So YUM! Their eggplant Shakshuka with scrambled tofu is also phenomenal.
Yellow- Pott’s Point
If I’m looking to really treat myself, or to celebrate a special occasion my top pick is always Yellow, Pott’s Point. The last time I went there their entire menu was exclusively vegan, aside from butter offered with the bread to start (so be aware!). The food is outstanding, and you’re bound to be both surprised and delighted with any visit you make.
I hope these selections were helpful for you; I wish you endless happy plant eating!
